Job Summary

The Medical College has the distinct advantage of being part of an over one-hundred-year history of service to the East African community through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which includes a broad range of community development and healthcare delivery services across the region. Currently, AKU and AKDN together operate the largest high-quality private, not-for-profit healthcare system in East Africa, consisting of four hospitals and 74 clinics that treat approximately 36,000 inpatients and 1.3 million outpatients annually. The AKU Medical College is focused on building quality public-private partnerships with government that will serve to increase quality and access, while providing students with relevant learning opportunities.
The Medical College has developed excellent international partners, providing great strength and opportunity for its growth as an academic health system stretching across East Africa. The Medical College offers the following postgraduate medical education programmes:

  • Internships
  • Master of Medicine
  • Fellowships.

The ideal candidate will bring substantial experience in education, research, professional service, faculty development and leadership in academic medical administration. International experience in the developing world would be advantageous.
Academic Criteria:
MD/MBBS or equivalent is a requirement; additional PhD is desirable.
Eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor on selection or soon thereafter.
Eligible for registration according to the regulatory bodies of Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda.


The Dean, Medical College is the Chief Academic and Chief Executive Officer, a member of the University’s senior leadership team and the primary ambassador for the College in the community.
The Dean plays a central role in setting strategy and overall direction for medical education in the context of health needs in the region; advises the Provost; works collaboratively with and supports other leaders to achieve the University goals; uses influence to align the College with University priorities; and, models institutional values and competencies.
As the Chief Academic Officer of the College, the Dean is responsible for education and scholarship, as well as ensuring the quality and integrity of the College in research, teaching, outreach and community engagement, ensuring collaboration and consultation with senior colleagues on all academic matters, including student admissions and reporting to Academic Committees. The Dean will participate in the establishment of an integrated system of healthcare delivery to support education and research in the region, which will require partnerships within AKDN and with other institutions including government.
As the Chief Executive Officer, the Dean is the highest-ranking official in the College, with wide responsibility over its functioning and general supervision over the College’s direction and work. The Dean is accountable for the creation and implementation of the College’s strategic plans including comprehensive budget and financial management to ensure outcomes are achieved.
As the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the College, the Dean promotes AKU and the College through visibility at local, regional, national and international events. In collaboration with senior colleagues, the Dean oversees fundraising, communication, alumni engagement activities and collaborates and consults with both internal and external stakeholders.
The Dean builds collaborative opportunities in health sciences within the University with AKDN partners and with the community to develop an academic health system and works in close coordination with other University leaders to promote a close programmatic relationship with the AKU Medical College in Pakistan. While retaining the unique aspects of the Medical College, EA, the Dean facilitates the University’s commitment to operating as a single integrated University, which requires enhanced harmonization between the two Medical Colleges in all areas, including educational programmes, research, application and intervention.
